Sunderland 3 fought past Concordia 2 in yet another tightly fought contest in Division 4.
The division is very tight, with just 27 points between fourth and ninth position, and six of the nine teams with a realistic chance of being relegated.
However, wins for Ben Sims, Matthew Edmundson and Keith Roberts saw Sunderland take a tie with five rubbers that could have gone either way.
Concordia started the better, as Nick Fecitt overcame losing the first set to beat Mark Buchanan 3-1 and give his side the lead.
Roberts levelled for the Wearsiders as he came through a five set battle with Bruno Gaultier. Roberts held on to win after Gaultier fought back from a 2-0 deficit to level.
Edmundson then gave the hosts the lead as he produced a tenacious display to beat Steven Goldie 3-1.
Another five set thriller threw the match back into the balance, as Concordia’s Ian McAllister beat Matthew Agar 3-2.
This left the tie hanging on the final match, and Ben Sims was able to come through a tight battle with Peter Archbold 3-1 and seal a win for his side.
The points were split 17-10 in favour of the Mackems.
Next up for Sunderland is a League Cup B tie with Tynemouth 5 on February 13, while Concordia welcome Eldon Leisure 2 in the league on February 19.
